Technical Skills

Technical Skills is an important, hands-on, part of Scout Training, and is the same for everyone from Joey Leaders through to Rover Scouts, Rover Advisers and Leaders of Adults. Much of it is covered through the Squire Training badge, but you will probably need to go through at least the Admin & Forms section specifically to qualify for Tech Skills.

You must have Technical Skills signed off before you can attend a Rover Basic Sectional Techniques course.

Who Can Sign Off on My Tech Skills?

You this can be signed off any any Rover or Leader (including RAs) who has completed Basic Training.

Technical Skills Requirements

Knots and Lashings

Learn and demonstrate all of the following:

  • Reef Knot.
  • Clove Hitch
  • Sheet Bend
  • Rolling Hitch
  • Bowline
  • Square Lashing
  • Round Lashing

Lean and Demonstrate any two of the following:

  • Sheepshank
  • Round Turn, Two Half Hitches
  • Diagonal Lashing
  • Figure 8 Lashing
  • Back and Eye Splices
  • Fisherman's Knot
  • Hunter's Bend
  • Surgeon's Knot
  • Prussick Knot
  • Prussick Lashing
  • Tie down a trailer or truck load

Learn and demonstrate the following:

  • The eight principal points of the compass and their equivalents in degrees.
  • The use and care of a compass.
  • The relationship between true and magnetic north.
  • How to set and follow a bearing.
  • How to read a map including scale
  • Reading, legend, grid references and contour lines.

Dress, Appearance, Ceremonies and Policies

  • Discuss the importance of and the reasons for having a uniform
  • Discuss what uniform is worn.
  • Demonstrate how the uniform is worn.
  • Demonstrate and explain when the Scout Salute, Scout Sign and left handshake are used.
  • Compile a list of terms and abbreviations used within the Movement.
  • Discuss the importance of punctuality
  • Show where to find the State Association's policies on smoking, drugs and alcohol.
  • Discuss the importance of Policy & Rules and it's importance to all Leaders.
  • Demonstrate the folding and breaking of the Australian Flag.
  • Demonstrate the role of the flag on parades in the Rover section.
  • Demonstrate conducting of opening and closing parade.
  • Participate in Investiture and Advancement ceremonies and know where they are found in the Ceremonies book.

Induction Training of Youth Members

  • State the induction training requirements for a new member.
  • State the key features of a continuous training program from Joeys to Rovers.
  • State the requirements of the Venturer-Rover Link Badge.
  • State how the planning of advancements are carried out in Group Council meetings.
  • State four aspects to be planned for the advancement of a Venturer to the Rover Section.

What's With All the Points in Italics?

Items listed in italics are also requirements of the Squire Training badge. If you have completed the Squire Training badge you only need to do the extra items above. If you have done Tech Skills with your Crew, they will be able to sign off on parts of your Squire Training badge too!

What do I do once I've finished my Tech Skills?

Once complete, sign the Technical Skills Completion page below, get it endorsed by your Crew Leader, RA or PLA and send it in to your the Training Office at the Victorian Scout Centre either by mail (152 Forster Road Mt Waverley VIC 3149) or by scanning it in and emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Who can sign my completion form?

Your Crew Leader or Rover Advisor would be best, but anyone who has completed basic training (can be for Rovers or any other section) is able to verify your competence.

Your Region Executive should be more than happy to point you in the direction of someone who can help you complete Tech Skills.

Your District Leader - Adult Training Support should be more than happy to help you out with Tech Skills.
